CHANDLER, Ariz. -- The Chandler rapist case continues sparking concerns and warnings for parents who leave their teenagers home alone before school. At last five girls, ages 12 to 14, have been attacked in their homes in a Chandler neighborhood since June 2006.The attacks happened in the mornings after the girls' parents left for work. "Parents need to be locking the doors and making sure there's no way for somebody to get into the house, that's number one," said security expert Robert Sollars."You really don't need a security system as long as you are locking your doors and your windows when you're leaving, when the parents are leaving," he said.As children leave for school, Sollars said, "The kids need to look out the front door, look out the windows, make sure the coast is clear before they walk out."Because the rapist cases his targets, most of them single-family homes, Sollars recommended that parents "leave at a different time every day.""Sure, the parents have to be at work at the same time every day, but if they have to be at work at 7:30, they can leave at 6:30 one morning, the next morning they can leave at seven," Sollars said.Sollars said kids can be armed with some type of defensive weapon."As far as knives and firearms, I have a real problem with that," he said. "But, clubs, a baseball bat or something like that that would normally be around the house, I don't have a problem with that."Both parents and children need always to be aware of their surroundings, Sollars said.
