Chandler police conducted an extensive search Thursday morning for a man who broke into a home near Dobson and Ray roads.

Police said the man may have matched the description of the Chandler rapist who has raped four girls and assaulted two others in Chandler since last June.

  • Police said a 15-year-old girl, who was home alone with two younger siblings, awoke around 6 a.m. to find the man inside her bedroom. Sgt. Rick Griner said the girl's father had already left for work.

The girl was not sexually assaulted, police said.

    The intruder fled the home.

Police set up a perimeter in the area and began a search using ground, air and K-9 units.

  • Phoenix police and the Department of Public Safety assisted in the search. The Phoenix Police Department's best K-9 unit was flown in by helicopter to help find the man.

No schools were placed on lockdown, but police said students would not be allowed to leave nearby schools once they had been dropped off.

The search was called off after about 2 1/2 hours.

The intruder is described as Hispanic, between 20 and 30 years old, with a stocky build and a shaved head. He wore a white T-shirt and jeans.

Chandler police, however, have not linked Thursday's incident to the serial rapist.

Detectives said they continue pursuing almost 2,000 tips in connection with the rapist cases.

All the victims have been between 12 and 14 years old. The last known attack connected to the man was a June 8 rape of a 14-year-old girl in her home.

All but one of the attacks pinned to the Chandler rapist occurred early in the morning while the victims were alone in their homes.

Neighbors aware of Thursday morning's burglary said they're concerned that a man who's stalked and attacked teenage girls may have come close once again.
