PHOENIX -- Business groups hold open the possibility of a court or ballot challenge to Arizona's employer sanctions bill, should Gov. Janet Napolitano sign it into law Monday.READ: House Bill 2779 "We want to let the governor decide what she's going to do before any other decisions are made with regard to going to the ballot or any other kind of challenge," said Todd Sanders with the Phoenix Chamber of Commerce.Sanders concedes the bill could have been worse. "The Legislature did put in some important provisions that will protect employers that are doing the right thing and that's important to us."
But Jessica Pacheco of the Arizona Chamber of Commerce is planning "a mass education campaign" for its members on how to comply with the law, if Napolitano signs it. "We will definitely be letting our membership know what is in the bill, what they need to do to be in compliance."Pacheco is against dealing with immigration on a state-by-state basis. "Piecemeal immigration reform such as the employer sanctions bill that's on the governor's desk is bad for Arizona and bad for the United States," she said. The Phoenix and Arizona chambers have led the opposition to imposing penalties for hiring illegal immigrants.
