Sketch Key To Serial Rapist Capture

Chandler Police To Canvass Neighborhoods Tuesday

POSTED: 4:15 pm MST June 11, 2007
UPDATED: 5:28 am MST June 12, 2007

Chandler police on Monday released a composite sketch of a serial rapist a witness said most closely resembles the attacker who investigators believe is behind five sexual assaults in the Chandler area since last June.

Investigators also announced they be conducting a neighborhood canvass in the area of Warner Road and Evergreen Street on Tuesday at 5:30 p.m. Officers will have their command van in the Wal-Mart parking lot at 800 West Warner Road. Members of the Chandler Police Department's Crime Prevention Unit will be there as well with handouts and flyers on safety.

Police said the more people who see the composite sketch the better the odds that someone will call police and turn him in.

Chandler police believe a man who sexually assaulted a 14-year-old girl Friday night is the serial rapist linked to four other sex assaults since last June.

Officers said they received a call of a burglary in progress at the Kon Tiki Mobile Home Park at 555 West Warner Road.

The caller said a man was in his 14-year-old granddaughter's room, according to police.

Officers responding to the scene established a perimeter and checked the area thoroughly, but the man was able to escape, police said.

Detectives were called to the scene and determined that the girl had been threatened with a weapon and sexually assaulted.

"We still believe he's doing surveillance on the victims prior to attacking," Sgt. Rick Griner told CBS 5 News. "How else would he know she would be alone in the residence and know the grandparents would be out front?"

The man was described as being the same person seen on previous Chandler police bulletins -- Hispanic, in his 30's and 5 feet 6 inches tall.

He has a muscular build, thin moustache and black hair. He wore a short-sleeved navy blue T-shirt and khaki colored pants.

Detectives said they believe it is the same man from previous sexual assaults based on his description, method of operation, the age of the victim, and its close proximity to the other sexual assaults.

The previous assaults occurred:

  • 06-04-06 -- 868 South Arizona Avenue

  • 01-16-07 -- 73 South Hamilton Street

  • 01-31-07 -- 1320 North McQueen Road

  • 03-23-07 -- 1100 block of North Monte Vista Street
  • His victims live within close proximity of each other -- within about a mile radius. Two of the attacks have been linked by physical evidence. All of the girls have been 13 or 14 years old.

Investigators have already checked out 80 percent of the 1,000 tips in these cases, and they're convinced somebody out there knows the identity of the man.

People with information should call Silent Witness at 480-WITNESS or Chandler Police at 480-782-4130.

While police don't know exactly where the man lives, they believe he likely resides within the area of all of these attacks.

They also believe he might be a day contractor, as one of the victims remembers seeing fresh blue and white paint on his workboots.
